(Cross-cultural conversation analysis)

This course is designed to improve your understanding of how spoken conversation can be affected by cross-cultural misunderstanding. We look at many different conversations between people from two different cultures. Each one has a breakdown (i.e. misunderstanging or problem or critical incident), and the breakdown is caused by cultural difference in thinking and perspective. The goal is to analyze these breakdowns to gain an understanding of hour different cultural perspectives can influence the outcome of conversations.

The Coronavirus has caused a number of problems for the university, and this moodle course is designed to allow the course to continue without face-to-face meetings if necessary. Usually, the course is done with a lot of groupwork, and groups discuss in English what is happening in the conversation and try to reach a good analysis of where the breakdown has occured and why. This year you will do these assignments individually for the most part, but you will still be required to upload written work (MS Word Document) and spoken work (sound file, .m4A) which you can record on your cellphone or PC.
